Role Purpose: Support the effective management of the deck crew and operations, ensuring efficient cargo handling and vessel maintenance while prioritizing safety, security, and environmental compliance. 

Key Responsibilities

Assist in cargo and ballast handling, mooring, and anchoring operations. Contribute to the planning and oversight of deck maintenance, ensuring equipment readiness. Maintain inventory of deck stores as delegated by the Chief Officer and supervise the deck crew to comply with safety, environmental, and security procedures and regulations. 

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Knowledge: The Bosun must be familiar with company policies, SOLAS, MARPOL, and flag state regulations. Key knowledge areas include the Theory and Practice of Seamanship, use and upkeep of firefighting and lifesaving appliances (FFA and LSA), emergency procedures, risk assessment, and hazard identification. Essential areas also include maintenance tasks, operating deck machinery, waste management, pollution control, and mooring operations. 

Essential Skills and Abilities: Effective leadership and communication skills are essential for the Bosun, along with the ability to operate and maintain deck equipment. Proficiency in anchoring, mooring, and ropework, including knots and splices, is crucial. Time management skills, resource prioritization, and a commitment to high standards of cosmetic maintenance and housekeeping are also required. 

Experience: Demonstrates reliability and leadership in managing deck operations, using deck machinery, rigging, and cargo handling equipment skilfully. Maintains high standards of deck condition and oversees the stowage and securing of deck equipment effectively. Shows advanced seamanship skills, including expertise in rope work and handling various types of lines, cables, and wires.
